Statement:

Split End was conceived for the 2014 72 Hour Film Shootout by the New York Asian American Film Lab. Filmmakers are tasked to create a 5 minute max story in less than 72 hours under the theme, "the color of my hair."

For Split End, I was lucky to have an established location predetermined by a party invitation in a backyard during the shootout. The setting inspired my heroine's character, a young single Asian woman who is bored with her social life while working as a caterer in New York City. The setup was a great opportunity to quickly explore how lonely and difficult it can still be for some even when surrounded by many people at once. Conversely, how many young and restless adults are never satisfied no matter how much they already have or desire. And what draws young people to chose what they do for relationships. Yellow fever? Greener pastures? The thrill of a fling?

I was thrilled to take part in another shootout and place in the Top-10. Although there is never enough time, making these 5 minute stories like Split End is a fantastic way for me to exercise my storytelling skills while possibly answering a few questions of my own.
