Statement

THE PERFECT NOTHING was created for the 72 Hour Shootout from the Asian American Film Lab where filmmakers are tasked to make a film from brief to finish under the theme, Lose The Labels.

The story was inspired by our fears with pregnancy in combination with a dear friend who concluded that she was not able to conceive even after exhausting almost all medical avenues available. Her husband left her shortly after for a younger woman.

This was an opportunity for to explore societal perception and labels on women who cannot have children versus women who do not want them, women who have children for personal reasons versus having them for the sake of others, or simply following tradition versus breaking them and so on.

It's also very difficult to know what steps to take as each decision will have it's own consequence. The path I may have taken was different from what my friend decided to do. But there are no rights nor wrongs. There is only action and inaction. And I left this for the viewer to make their own choice.
