That Kid

When Evelyn prepares lunch she tries to find the cause of her quirky grandson’s anger at a visiting doe while Fabian (they) want to know what mysterious illness she has. As both cope with the reality that they’re the only family left, Fabian is even more determined to banish the lingering animal. That Kid explores the courage of this unlikely pair in the face of bullying, family adversity and mortality.

I was honored when Jane asked me to direct That Kid for the 41st Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival. Conceived from her own experiences, Jane was wonderfully receptive to diversifying the cast. That led us to Juanita Howard, a 70 year-young grandmother, and Tyasia Valines, a talented emerging actor who’s own non-binary journey enhanced the subtext on race, identity and bullying. Although not a finalist, That Kid was met with great applause and a new perspective.
